In light of the resent escape of Jemaah Islamiah (JI) leader, Mas Selamat. It leads one to think if enough is being done to stop the treat of terrorism, which is a major social issue. Before the escape of Mas Selamat, most would think that terrorism was non-existent in Singapore. However this escape has rekindled the very real treat of terrorism, without his escape I am certain that many have forgotten the treat of the JI of crashing a plane into Changi Airport. This in some ways shows how Singaporeans are oblivious to the social treat of a terrorist attack. This escape shows how Singapore is affected socially because of his escape, roads have been clogged with traffic and parents are not sending their children to school in fear that their children might be in danger with a terrorist on the lose. One is lead to wonder if enough is being done to control this social issue. How can a terrorist escape from a detention center and the public is only informed four hours later? Now that the terrorist is on the lose we are left wondering what would happen to Singapore if a terror attack hit our shores, and more ironically lead my Mas Selamat.
In an article in the Straits Time February 29, Mr Wong our home affairs ministers was quoted saying that there was no immanent danger to the public. This might be true however the escape of Mas Selamat might lead to a terror attack later, and this will be a danger to the public and a major social issue. The social impact of terrorism in Singapore will be very bad. Singapore has a multi-racial community a terrorist attack might break this strong bond that has made Singapore so Unique and strong. This might turn for example the Chinese against the Malays, thus a terror attack on Singapore will affect Singapore greatly, as there will be a break down in the social structure of Singapore.
Thus I conclude that terrorism in Singapore will affect it greatly socially and economically thus terrorism in Singapore is a very strong social issue we must all do our part to stop terrorism and safeguard Singapore’s social structure.
